A Tower-by-Tower Look at UDOT’s Approved Gondola Project
Canyon Guard invites you to take a virtual tour of the 22 gondola towers, base, and two angle stations the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has approved for construction in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Using maps from UDOT’s Record of Decision (ROD), we’ve created an interactive experience that lets you explore the full scale and impact of this massive project — tower by tower, from the mouth of the canyon to Alta.
We’ve built two tools to help you understand the full scope of what’s been approved:
1. A virtual tour hosted on Google My Maps where each dot represents a proposed gondola tower location based on maps from UDOT’s official ROD.
2. Our timed video, showing each tower’s location as you travel up Little Cottonwood Canyon. Each tower appears in sequence and location.
How to use the Map on our website:
Click on any location icon to:
- View the tower’s precise location in the canyon
- Access a one-page fact sheet with:
- Tower height and dimensions
- Renderings or photos
- Environmental and visual impact context
Each fact sheet is designed to help you picture the scale of steel and concrete structures rising up to 200+ feet, repeated 24 times through a wild and fragile alpine canyon.
- Open the Tour page
- Explore the Canyon – Zoom and pan across Little Cottonwood Canyon to see all 22 tower locations, the base station and two angle stations.
- Click on a Tower Icon – A box will appear with a link to that tower’s individual fact sheet.
- Open the Fact Sheet – Click the link to view or download a PDF with detailed information, images, and context.
- Repeat for Each Tower – Take your time. Visualize what this corridor of towers will feel like in one of Utah’s most iconic and beloved canyons.
Canyon Guard has also created a video tour. The video is timed so that each gondola tower appears approximately where it would be along the route, giving you a real-time visual guide to the scale and spacing of the 22 towers approved for construction.

This is the future UDOT has approved. The Little Cottonwood Gondola project will forever change the visual and environmental character of the canyon. This virtual tour allows you to see it for yourself — before it’s built — and decide:
Is this how you want Little Cottonwood Canyon to look in the future?
